I’m From AI and I am Here to Help You
I know that is not the normal version of that expression, but it applies to AI. You just might not like what that help looks like.
With the help of AI, Microsoft patched 400 bugs, plus or minus, depending on how you count. Last month it was around 600. June, which was pre-AI “Help” was around 200. As I warned, this is only going to get worse.
Just pulling from today’s news:
- Researchers at Nanyang Technological University turned a set of AI agents loose on the software that runs 4G and 5G phone networks, and the agents came back with 84 security flaws nobody had reported before. Developers confirmed all but one. One of them takes over your data session delivering all of your Internet traffic to the hacker instead of to the Internet. This has been fixed by one vendor and not fixed by a “major 5G carrier” (like, maybe, AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile)? Credit: Helpnet Security
- Samsung patched 176 vulnerabilities in Samsung phone apps. You know, the ones that they install and won’t let you uninstall. The vulnerabilities include things like controlling your camera. Samsung has created patches but this affects around a hundred million devices and I bet many of them have not been patched. Credit: Hackread
- Zoom has a ZERO-CLICK REMOTE CODE EXECUTION BUG. It allows hackers to compromise meeting participants. They affect Zoom client versions before 7.1.5 or 7.0.6 and also affect Zoom VDI, Zoom rooms and Zoom meeting SDK. Credit: My Privacy Blog
- It took the researcher who found these a single AI LLM and less than 20 prompts on a publicly available LLM model and less than 24 hours.
That is just from today’s news. That doesn’t consider Google’s 1,000+ patches last month or Oracle’s 1,400+ patches.
For many companies patching means running Windows Update. THAT IS NOT ENOUGH. And just because you don’t use the XYZ software, if it is installed it may still be a security hole.
If the Chinese or North Koreans or Iranians run an AI 24x7x365 and feed it every piece of commercial software they can lay their hands on, what do you think the outcome is going to be?
