French Police Go After Twitter and Musk
French police along with Europol executed a search warrant on Twitter’s Paris office.
They also “invited” Mr. Musk to come to Paris to talk to them. While the invite is voluntary, if he does not come, they will make their own conclusions as to what laws he and Twitter broke and likely file whatever charges they want to.
Part of the investigation centers on Twitter’s (and Grok) production of child porn, which is, apparently, just as illegal in France as it is in the United States.
Twitter, course, denied any wrongdoing, but this has to be viewed under the light of what is legal or not in France, not in the United States.
The prosecutor said that their objective in the raid was to ensure Twitter is complying with French law.
French authorities said that Grok generated posts that denied the Holocaust. Which is unfortunate because that is a crime in France. Grok is reported to have claimed that the gas chambers in Auschwitz were designed for disinfection rather than for mass murder. This is language that Holocaust deniers have used for a long time.
Grok also praised Hitler, but that post was eventually taken down.
Britain’s Information Commissioner’s Office is also investigating if X/xAI is following the law when processing personal data and whether Grok had any measures in place to prevent its use to generate “harmful manipulated images”. Some reports say that Grok is producing up to 6,700 undressed images an hour.
Given Musk’s resistance to doing anything that anyone says he has to do, it will be interesting to see how he responds to this. The problem he is facing is that countries all over the globe are either banning his applications or investigating him
