Claude Mythos is NOT the End of Civilization, but Don’t Get Too Comfortable

When Anthropic released Claude Mythos to a select group of insiders, it came along with a warning that the end of the world was nigh.

That is probably a bit of an overstatement, but still, it is pretty damn good.

The UK AI Security Institute did an analysis of it – remember this is only a beta, so it could get better – even much better – before it is released.

According the the UK AISI says it is the first model to complete their “cyber range” end-to-end, meaning it could, by itself, with no human help, do a complete takeover of your cyber assets.

But then they go on to say “in 2023 the best models could barely complete beginner-level tasks. Today, our evaluation of Mythos Preview shows that it – and potentially future models – could be directed to autonomously compromise small, weakly defended, and vulnerable systems if given network access.”

So think about this. There are hundreds of millions of networks out there. If someone like China were to compile a list of initial access (credentials) that they already have, they could feed that into Mythos and let it run 24x7x365 to see what it could compromise. Maybe, today well defended networks might be safe, but that doesn’t mean they will be in six months.

In the words of Clint Eastwood, are you feeling lucky punk?
