AI Image Fraud Estimated to Cost $40 Bil Next Year

So far efforts to combat deepfakes and AI based scams have not been terribly effective. In fact, it has been pretty much a disaster.

Estimates are that deep fake fraud losses were about $12 billion in 2023.

And $40 billion by next year according to Deloitte’s Center for Financial Services.

The problem is that there really is no good way to detect fake images or videos.

I think I am pretty good at detecting AI slop but I also know I am not perfect.

Several international standards organizations including ISO are developing standards to HELP users tell the difference between AI content and real content, but even if they do, the standards have to be adopted and integrated into software.

And, the standards are not even finished yet.

So expect a few bumpy years – at least a few. It is going to get much worse before it gets better.
