2024 May be Worse for Attacks Than 2023

According to Flashpoint, a threat intelligence service, 2023 recorded 6,077 breaches compromising more than 17 billion records. That is a 35 percent increase over 2022.

The U.S. represented 60 percent of all breaches in 2023, a 19 percent increase over 2022. For the first two months of 2024, that number is up 30 percent over 2023.

This even takes into account the massive breach numbers represented by the MOVEit breach in 2023.

The feds, along with their international partners, put a dagger in the heart of one of the most prolific ransomware attackers, LockBit, towards the end of February, so we will see whether that improves the numbers whenever the next report comes out.

Consider this though. Even Flashpoint admits that these numbers are only an estimate and likely are MUST lower than reality. We hear all the time of breaches that were never reported. Still, the percentage of non-compliance is probably relatively constant from year to year, so if the number are up 400 percent year over year, that percentage is probably okay.

To give you an idea of how UNDER reported these numbers are, Flashpoint discovered 330 vulnerabilities BEING EXPLOITED IN THE WILD that did not have a common vulnerability enumeration (CVE) number. CVE is the method that the government uses to track vulnerabilities and there are usually tens of thousands of these reported each year.

So, if you believed the spin doctors and thought the attacks were doing down; sorry, I don’t think that is true.
