Ten Percent of Small Businesses Breached in 2019 Shut Down
Numbers that I have seen before provide statistics that I find hard to believe, but stats from a survey conducted on behalf of the National Cyber Security Alliance seem believable. The stats include:
- 88% consider themselves a somewhat likely target for attacks
- 46% think they are a very likely target
- 46% say they are very prepared to respond to an attack
- 58% have a response plan they could put into action quickly
- 33% say they could run their businesses without computers – which means that two thirds would have to stop conducting business
- Nearly 30% admitted that they had an official security breach (I assume this means one that was reported to the authorities) in the last year
- 69% of the breach victims were knocked offline for a while
- 37% of the breach victims suffered financial loss
- 25% filed for bankruptcy (that is a large number)
- and 10% went out of business
A couple of thoughts –
How do you stack up in answers to those questions?
I don’t believe that 58% really have a response plan that they could put into effect quickly. Maybe. I Doubt it.
That 25% had to file for bankruptcy protect and 10% went out of business after a breach is a bit sobering.
The message is no one is immune and now is the time to get ready.
