Researchers Discover A Perfect Way to Hack Your Car. Radio.

I am not sure why your car radio seems to always provide a way to hack your car, but it does.

Researchers at PCA Cyber Security discovered an attack they are called PerfektBlue.

The attack focuses on the BlueSDK framework from OpenSynergy and they found several vulnerabilities. Some of these allow for remote code execution, bypassing security and leaking information.

After chaining the vulnerabilities together the researchers were able to track the vehicle’s location, record what occupants are saying inside the car and steal your phonebook data.

While not yet demonstrated, they think they will be able to control the horn (noisy but not lethal), wipers (also not lethal) and steering (definitely lethal).

The hack was demonstrated against Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and Skoda as well as an unnamed OEM.

If you haven’t patched your car recently, now would be a good time to do that.
