Phishing Email Volume up 569%
In case you have not notice, email security firm Cofense scanned emails from 35 million of its customers. Luckily, they used machine learning to do the analysis.
Cofense’s report has these major conclusions:
- The number of credential phishing emails sent spiked by 478%;
- Emotet and QakBot are the top malware families observed;
- For the eighth consecutive year, business email compromise (BEC) ranked as the top cybercrime;
- Web3 use jumped by 341%;
- And there was an 800% increase in the use of Telegram bots for exfiltration.
The numbers are a bit mind boggling.
Among the statistics – A third of the phishing emails have a finance theme. This is not surprising because that is where the money is. The rest are all over the place from shipping scams to faxes.
Its also not a surprise that most of the attacks attempt to steal your credentials.
There is also a clear winner of which malware family hackers like:
This is likely because – you guessed it – Emotet steals credentials.
