A Remote Access Trojan or RAT is a piece of malicious software that allows an attacker to remotely and silently control a victim’s computer. Once infected all data on the victim’s computer is effectively compromised and that computer can be used as a beachhead to launch an attach on other computers in the victim’s network.
In this case, the attacker is trying to get the Quasar Remote Access Trojan. Once installed, the trojan allows the attacker to open a remote connection to the computer from anywhere in the world, log keystrokes, capture passwords, take video of the user via the webcam, steal files and other things.
In this particular case, the RAT gets installed when the victim opens the Word document attachment which is supposedly a resume and enables macros.
Experts say this is a product of Iran.
Bottom line – resist opening attachments and do not turn on macros unless you are very, very, very sure of the contents of the file.
This particular attachment uses a number of techniques to hide what it is doing to make it more difficult to dissect. Source: Bleeping Computer.
