Google Replaces Cookies with Fingerprints for Even Less Privacy

Google has been warning everyone that cookies as a tracking mechanism were going away for a couple of years now. This is not because Google found a soul but rather because Google knows that browsers and users can block or trash cookies making them ineffective as a way to track where you go.

In addition, Google would like to be able to better track you between your computer, phone and pad. Even your smart TV or washing machine.

Enter “fingerprinting”. Still not perfect, but since it is much harder to counter fingerprints (there is no delete my fingerprint like there is a toss my cookies menu item), it is much more invasive and advertisers love invasive.

To block cookies, individuals can use ad blockers, cookie blockers and incognito mode or clear their cookie cache, but with digital fingerprinting those protections aren’t available.

Because of how digital fingerprinting strips users of agency over their privacy, Google’s move is catching the attention of data protection authorities overseas, where information collection by tech companies is tightly regulated.

The technology can gather fingerprint data across devices sharing an IP address, as well as across different web sessions, which can be used to build highly personal identity profiles for advertisers, data brokers and potentially governments targeting journalists and activists, experts said. But, still, there are things you can do if you are motivated.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation has a tool called Cover your Tracks which allows you to see how well your browser protects your privacy.

They also have a free tool called Privacy Badger that helps protect your privacy. This tool blocks most privacy trackers and also randomizes your browser fingerprint.

Finally, some browsers have settings that can enhance your privacy. Others do not. Here is some information about how you can set those settings in many browsers.

By the way, while a VPN changes your IP address, it doesn’t change most of the parameters that are used in fingerprinting you.

Nothing is perfect. You need to be proactive – if you care. Please reach out if you have questions.
