Even Friendly Governments Use Spyware to Cover Up Corruption

According to a draft report from the European Parliament, EU governments have used spyware on their citizens for political purposes and to cover up corruption and criminal activity.

The 159 page report comes after revelations about the Pegasus Project. The Pegasus Project report is based on reporting by an international group of journalists and is based on the tool from the NSO group.

They said the tool from NSO Group had regularly been used for political purposes and it was even used against European Union officials.

The committee said that the European Council was ignoring the problem. The used the word “omerta”. That term goes back to the Sicilian mafia days – the code of silence.

The committee called for the European Commission to conduct a comprehensive and in-depth investigation into the abuse of and trade in spyware in the EU.

I wonder what other governments are doing the same thing.

After all, the vast majority of NSO’s customers were governments.
