Surge in Swatting Attacks Targets Execs and Board Members

On February 1, a caller to Groveland, Massachusetts 911 said that the caller harmed someone at a particular address in an upscale town 30 miles outside of Boston. The caller said he would also harm first responders.

The police chief summoned police, fire and called for mutual aid from the nearby towns of Ipswitch, Rowley, Topsfield and Haverhill. After evacuating houses on the street, the police realized the call was a hoax.

In general, we are seeing a rise in swatting hoaxes. In the last few weeks we heard of fake swatting calls claiming attacks at dozens of schools across the country.

Callers are specifically targeting executives and board members of large companies according to executive protection firm BlackCloak.

The attackers use data from the dark web, data brokers, company websites and property records.

Recent attacks have focused on the healthcare, biomed, pharma and esports industries, but it has now expanded to other sectors.

BlackCloak says what they are seeing now is very different. It is a coordinated, precision attack against corporate executives.

The attackers use data stolen in thousands of cyber attacks, among other sources.

While there are steps that you can take to protect your family, it is not simple and it will require changes by both the executives and their families.
