The FBI, NSA and CISA are warning that threats from “synthetic media” AKA deepfakes pose a growing threat.
They say that criminals and spies are going to be using AI generated content to access systems by impersonating your staff and/or conning your customers.
In the end, you are the one left paying the bill and getting sued.
What if an AI masqueraded as your CTO and made an IT person grant an intruder or rogue user admin permissions? Or your CFO and asked someone to wire money?
The feds say the target industries include military, government, first responder, defense industrial base employees and critical infrastructure.
Deepfakes could be used to damage a company’s brand, impersonate company leaders and make fraudulent communications for a multitude of reasons. It could be as simple as to create chaos.
Think tank Eurasia Group ranks generative AI as the number 3 risk this year. They say: “Resulting technological advances in artificial intelligence (AI) will erode social trust, empower demagogues and authoritarians, and disrupt businesses and markets.”
The feds are also concerned about deepfakes being used to sow false information about political, social, military and economic issues. This could cause unrest and even violence.
It works in all countries. Recently we saw a deepfake of an explosion at the Pentagon affecting the stock market and Russian TV hackers aired a deepfake video of Putin declaring martial law.
This is a technology that is in its infancy and maturing at an incredible rate. Just wait until you see what is possible next year.
This means that you should up your training for employees, figure out how to communicate both internally and externally when the hackers control the “official” channels and have a plan for damage control.
