Apple Accused of Tracking Users Who Opted Out

Even Apple is not above putting money ahead of everything else. At least that is what a new lawsuit claims.

The potential class-action claims Apple is violating Pennsylvania’s wiretapping and electronic surveillance act as well as breaching its trade practices and consumer protection law by making claims that customers could disable tracking or collecting their data – something the phones do not do.

Among other things, the suit claims that Apple tracks what stocks you are watching, including the time-stamps of when you are watching. And then sells the data.

The suit also claims that Apple tracks which news articles that you see.

Contrary to Apple’s billboards in Vegas, it is not true that “What happens on your iPhone, stays on your iPhone”, the company says.

The suit is based on research done by two independent app developers at Mysk, founded by app developer and security researcher Tommy Mysk.

This might have less “legs” if you were allowed to download apps from other places besides Apple, but you cannot do that easily.

This suit was filed in Pennsylvania. There is another suit pending in California, also based on Mysk’s research, claiming Apple is violating California’s Invasion of Privacy Act.

Apple has not commented yet on the new lawsuit, but Apple’s image is getting a bit dented when it comes to privacy.
