China Gives US Sanctions the Middle Finger

The US has been trying to reign in China’s thefts of intellectual property and other bad behavior by putting tech sanctions on them.

The next president wants to increase sanctions on China. Will it work?

Huawei, China’s leading phone maker was seriously impacted over the last 2-3 years over the restriction of US made chips. So what did they do?

Huawei just released the Mate 70 family of phones.

They don’t need either iOS or Android; they developed their own operating system called Harmony OS Next.

It uses new homegrown chips called the Kirin 9100 and 9020. Sanctions don’t impact that.

The base version of the phone has 16 gig of RAM and a 50 MP camera. It has 5G and is based on 7 nanometer chip manufacturing tech – state of the art.

The starting price of the phone is about $750 – well below the price of similar Apple and Android phones.

Even though they can’t sell that phone in the US, there are well over a hundred countries that are likely willing to buy a phone like that.

One addition to giving US sanctions the middle finger, they are also doing the same to Apple. China is one of Apple’s biggest markets. If Huawei is successful it could have a significant financial impact on Apple. One that won’t be easy to recover from.

The world is complicated and old school solutions are much less effective than they used to be. Credit: Cybernews
